December 2011- March 5th 2012 Trade Price Increase

    Due to continued escalating transport and base raw material costs beyond our immediate control, resulting in unsustainable increases in our distribution and manufacturing costs; we provide the market forward notification of a General Trade Price increase effective Monday 5^th March 2012.

October 2011 - MEPS ELV Halogen Lamps

Continuing with the MEPS (lamp) program; an important milestone in the phasing out of inefficient lamps will be introduced in April 2012. The ruling addresses the maximum wattage for ELV halogen lamps above 37 watts in accordance with Australian Standard AS4934.2-2011 Part 2: Mimimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), which states "For ELV halogen reflector lamps, the average measured wattage shall be no more than 37W).

With an effective date 12 months after the publication of this standard", the enforcement date is April 2012. The relevant section of AS4934.2-2011 will be legislated in each state and the expected outcome of the legislation is the 50 Watt MR16 halogen lamp will not be able to be imported after April 2012.

September 2011 - Online Lighting Course

The Pierlite on-line lighting course has been designed to refresh your basic lighting knowledge. The interactive program demonstrates that with the correct luminaire and light source selection, the designer can effectively create a design solution that balances lighting excellence and energy efficiency. The e-learning portal challenges the user via an introduction tutorial, which is then followed with a series of multiple choice questions and with a suitable PASS, the course concludes with the presentation of an on-line certificate.  Enjoy the Pierlite challenge!

August 2011 - SSL Label System

Solid State Lighting (SSL) technology - also known as LEDs, or light emitting diodes - holds considerable promise to substantially increase energy efficiency across a range of lighting applications. The rapid growth of SSL has resulted in an increasing number of new products on the Australian Market. While there are some excellent SSL products available, the Australian Market is also being subjected to underperforming product that does not live up to its supplier's claims. Such poor performing product can undermine confidence among users and discourage early adopters of the technology. This underperforming product has the potential to delay or otherwise compromise the substantial energy savings potential of SSL.

For these reasons Lighting Council Australia, which is fully supported by Pierlite Australia, has instituted a quality scheme for SSL, based on a scheme introduced by the US department of Energy in conjunction with the US lighting undustry.

The SSL Quality Scheme is a voluntary industry scheme that provides confidence to the market that a luminaire carrying the Scheme's label, such as Pierlite STARBURST downlight range, matches certain performance claims made by the supplier.

A minimum set of critical parameters are reported by participating SSL luminaire suppliers, such as Pierlite Australia, to accurately reflect the performance of their products. Scheme participants provide test reports or other evidence to Lighting Council Australia verifying their claims. Lighting Council Australia registers the product on a database on its website (www.lightingcouncil.com.au) and authorises use of a label owned by Lighting Council indicating conformance to the parameters.

The critical parameters appearing on the SSL Quality Scheme Label are:

• Luminaire efficacy
• Light output of the luminaire
• Measured imput power
• Correlated colour temperature
• Colour rendering index

August 2011 - The Cloud

Unusual structures often require unusual lighting designs, as was the case with the New Zealand project affectionately referred to as "The Cloud". The construction of this building on the Auckland waterfront, which is planned as the entertainment hub for the 2011 World Cup Rugby Union tournament, provided the design team at Gerard Lighting NZ a unique challenge.The physical nature of the construction with its twisting shape created many challenges for the lighting designers. In brief, the lighting concept was to illuminate the building in such a way as to allow it to glow and stand out on the waterfront as an iconic architectural statement.

The solution: five hundred (500) DALI controlled coloured fluorescent lamps installed in Pierlite BWPT/5 luminaires installed along the twisting structure on both sides of the building. A unique self adhesive mounting system designed and manufactured by the team at Gerard Lighting NZ was used to avoid drilling of the beams and to provide an even colour distribution onto the canvas surface. August 2011 - 3rd October Trade Price Increase - First Notice

In line with notice received today via our strategic lamp partner (Philips Lighting), due to ongoing and escalating raw material costs in the production of fluorescent lamp products (in particular rare earth oxides used in the construction of lamp phosphors), Pierlite Australia is now forced to pass these global increases onto the market effective Monday 3rd October 2011.

Key product families impacted by this notice are:

1. Linear fluorescent lamps AND luminaires

2. Compact fluorescent lamps (non-intergrated) AND luminaires

3. Compact fluorescent lamp (intergrated) AND luminaires

Price files outlining the changes will be confirmed to our Trade partners in due course; for implementation Monday 3rd October for all nominated products invoiced past the effective date.

June 2011 - 2010 / 2011 Camera Competition Winner

Thank you to all of the entrants and the eight finalists; we were overwhelmed at the interest of the competition and quality of the dynamic photography. We are pleased to announce that the major finalist and winner of the Pierlite Australia 2010/2011 Camera Competition, winning a trip to Milan (city) is Jan Jinadasa of the JJA Consulting Group for his September entry showcasing the Linfox Head Office - Victoria, presented by Ben Mills - Executive General Manager, Pierlite Australia. The creative design utilized the Pierlite "GMR250MH" & "GMRN 400W" floodlights located strategically to provide a uniform lighting level of the building eave and all sides of the external building structure. By maintaining the uplight component below the eave canopy, the design achieved an overall 5 star Green Star rating for the total building design. May 2011- Philips Master LED Tube

Philips Master LED tube integrates LED light source with frosted cover design into traditional linear fluorescent form factor. The new light source offers naturally light colours while consuming 22 watts system energy when replacing TLD36 watt with electromagnetic ballast and offers energy saving up to 50%. The new LED tube is also available in 11 watt replacing TLD 18 watt and 17 watt replacing TLD 30 watt.

May 2011 - Release of MEPS Standard

AS4934.2-2011 was released on April 14th 2011. This standard relates to minimum energy performance for incandescent lamps for general lighting services.

The standard lists enforcment dates for non complying lamps. The key points from this standard are:

1. A new MEPS requirement has been published for mains voltage halogen non reflector lamps such as Philips Eco Classic. This will allow complying lamps to continue to be sold in the market for at least another two years.

2. After April 2012, MR16 lamps will have an average measured wattage no greater than 37 watts.

As the enforcement date rolls over only lamps registered on the energy rating.com.au site are legally entitled to be sold.

Philips lamps sold by Pierlite will comply with AS4934.2-2011 and will be registered on the energy rating website.

This exciting project designed by Kuttner Collins and partners Sydney consisted of the refurbishment of a teaching and preparation laboratory within the Bosch Building at the University of Sydney. April 2011 Energy Saving LEDs Update 60 degree Now Available

PHILIPS Master LED 7 & 10W MR16 lamps have now been released. These have been designed to replace traditional MR16 halogen lamps. As a general guide 7 Watt is a replacement for 35 Watt Halogen and 10 Watt is a replacement for 50 Watt Halogen.

February 2011 - SIMES Sketchbook

SIMES have released the new SIMES Sketchbook Series. These unique publications provide a guide for designers, engineers and installers using real visual references of exterior lighting applications. Book 2, titled 'Architectural Volume' demonstrates the use of light and colour to enhance the exteriors of buildings and architectural features. The design concepts show the intergration of uplighters, narrow beam spotlights and downlights and how they create a spatial perception of the building. December 2010 - DIALUX

Pierlite Australia will be launching DIALUX throughout February 2011 and as part of the introduction program, Pierlite Australia in conjunction with the DIAL team will be conducting a number of training seminars, from introductory to advanced. The training seminar invitations are limited are are open to (first available) registered (professional) Australian Lighting designers employed by a current lighting/electrical design practice with a registered Australian ABN. December 2010-Pierlite Australia Competition Winner November 2010

The selection of photographs for the month of November were outstanding and we are pleased to announce the winner of the Canon SLR Camera and an entry into the finals round of the competition is Arnold Hoehn of Best Consultants WA; for his impressive photography of the Civic Centre landscape. Based upon the client's brief to use an energy efficient light source and provide a dramatic lighting effect for the new Civic Centre landscape, Arnold Hoehn chose an inground SIMES LED uplight distributed by Pierlite Australia, which produced the light dark contrasts of the sculpture. As you will see the luminaire selection created a spectacular effect; highlighting the metallic structure of the artwork and making the new sculpture the standout in the Civic Centre landscaping. November 2010 - Pierlite Australia Competition Winner October 2010

Pierlite Australia Stephen Jewell (left) was proud to present Anthony Turco of SKM Victoria the winning prize for the 2010 October Pierlite Photographic Competition consisting of a fantastic CANON SLR camera for his entry on behalf of the Sugarloaf Pipeline Alliance. The Sugarloaf Pipeline Project is located in Central Victoria, 35km east of Melbourne and links the Goulburn River near Yea with the Sugarloaf Reservoir. The High-lift and Low-lift pumping station within the Sugarloaf Pipeline Project utilised Pierlite Luminaires extensively throughout the two pumping stations. The main objective of the high-lift pumping station is to generate sufficient lift to pump water up and over the Great Dividing Range. Congratulations to Anthony. November 2010- October Photographic Competition Winner Announced

Another selection of exciting photographs and the winner for October is: Anthony Turco of Sinclair Knight Merz Victoria for his photography of the Sugarloaf Pipeline. Located in Central Victoria, Australia, 35km east of Melbourne, the pipeline is 70km in length and links the Goulburn River near Yea with the Sugarloaf Reservoir. The pipeline is an integral part of Victoria's water system acting as a link between Melbourne's water grid and the Murray-Goulburn water grid, supplying water via a series of existing and proposed  pipelines.

The High-lift and Low-lift pumping station within the Sugarloaf Pipeline Project utilised Pierlite luminaires extensively throughout the two pumping stations. The main objective of the high lift pumping station is to generate sufficient lift to pump the water up and over the Great Dividing Range. The images demonstrate excellent task illumination and uniformity, together with the challenge of the limited mounting locations along the wall surface for the luminaires, due to the mechanical crane operating below the roof line.

MEPS levels for mains voltage non reflector lamps were scheduled for commencement on 1st October 2010 at levels set by AS/NZS4934.2:2008 "subject to annual review".

Review of the market place has indicated the MEPS level for the initial efficacy values of mains voltage halogen non reflector lamps would not allow sufficient product availability if the MEPS levels were implemented.

To ensure sufficient product availability a revised MEPS level for mains voltage halogen non reflector lamps, similar to levels applied in Europe, will be applied for an initial two year period.

October 2010 - Pierlite Australia Camera Competition Winner

Pierlite Australia Stephen Jewell (left) and Allan Jarvis (right) were proud to present Jan Jinadasa (centre) of the JJA Consulting Group the winning prize for the 2010 September Pierlite Photographic Competition consisting of a fantastic CANON SLR camera for his entry of the Linfox Head Office. Located within the Essendon Airport, the total  external facade is illuminated using approximately 40 x Pierlite "GMR250MH" & "GMRN 400W" floodlights located strategically to provide a uniform lighting level of the building eave and all sides of the external building structure. By maintaining the uplight component below the eave canopy, the design achieved an overall 5 star Green Star rating for the total building design. October 2010 - Hoffmeister LED Design for the NRW State Parliament 2010

The entire lighting system of the plenary hall in the Dusseldorf state parliament was extensively renewed during the summer break. The original lighting with high-output metal halide lamps has been replaced by recessed LED DL170 downlights from Hoffmeister. October 2010- September Photographic Competition Winner Announced

The Pierlite Photographic Competition for the month of September has been awarded and the winner is... Jan Jinadasa from JJA Consulting Group for this outstanding project application of Linfox Head Office - Essendon Airport, VIC. The installation showcases a selection of Pierlite GMR250MH and GMRN400W floodlights, strategically located to provide a uniform lighting level along the building facade whilst maintaining any light spill below the eave alignment, which allowed the design to achieve an overall 5 star Green Star rating. Sydney Harbour, Kirribilli NSW

Pierlite was invited to provide a modern and practical lighting design for the NSW Maritime, Sydney Public Wharves. The luminaire of choice was the Delta series based upon its superior optical performance and ability to minimise any potential glare source for the approaching ferry captains. Located on each public ferry wharf around the beautiful Sydney Harbour, this exceptional and innovative design provided a professional design solution for BCA and the Maritime's design standards.
